YOUNG BABY
HOW TO SUCCEED

Senses

Newborn babies respond to a variety of different sensations, especially caressing, cuddling and gentle stroking. A crying infant may be calmed by warm baths, massaging, and a gentle rocking movement in the mother’s arms. Newborns comfort themselves by either sucking their thumb or a comforter, such as a plastic that the infant can suck. The ability to suckle comes naturally and allows the baby to feed with ease and comfort.

A newborn baby’s vision is somewhat limited in terms of depth, but is sufficient to watch its mother whilst breastfeeding. Once the infant is able to move about on its own, its depth perception, which is the visual ability to view in three dimensions, develops. When hungry, the natural reaction is to cry. In the absence of feeding, crying and sleeping, a newborn may simply spend its time staring at random objects. Any object that the baby regards as interesting will hold its attention, especially looking at other human faces.

Whilst developing inside the mother, a baby can hear internal noises, such as its mother’s heartbeat, and also external sounds, such as music and human voices. A newborn will respond more readily to a female voice, and the sound of human voices, especially its mothers, tends to have a calming effect. It will prefer those sounds that it recognises whilst in the womb, such as its mothers favourite music.

Although preferring sweet tastes, a newborn baby will respond to many different tastes, such as sour and salty substances.

At birth, a newborn has a highly developed sense of smell, and can distinguish between its mother’s breast milk and that of another female.
